Question 1

What should I check on an older VW 1.2 or 1.4 TSI?

Accepted Answer

The timing chain: the early chain-driven 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines, built until about 2012, could stretch it, which shows as a rattle on a cold start. Ask whether the chain and tensioner have been replaced.

Question 2

What is ACT on a VW 1.5 TSI?

Accepted Answer

Active Cylinder Management shuts down two of the four cylinders under light load to save fuel. It is fitted to many 1.4 and 1.5 TSI engines, works unnoticed in everyday driving and needs no extra maintenance.

Question 3

Is a used VW Golf GTI or Golf R better for Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The Golf R has 4Motion all-wheel drive, useful on snowy mountain roads, while the GTI drives the front wheels only. Both use the 2.0 TSI, so check for tuning and for tyres and brakes worn by hard driving.

Question 4

Which new VW petrol models are sold in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Volkswagen sells the Polo, T-Cross, T-Roc, Golf, Golf GTI, Golf R, Tiguan, Tayron and Passat with petrol engines, as well as the Caddy, Multivan and California. Depending on the model they come with a manual or an automatic gearbox, at list price beside the used cars.
