Question 1

What documents come with a used car in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The Fahrzeugausweis, which the seller hands over, and ideally the service book and the last MFK report. If the Fahrzeugausweis carries a note barring a change of holder, typically from a leasing company, their consent is needed.

Question 2

Is there a tax when you buy a used car in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

No, a car on Swiss plates pays no registration tax when it changes hands, only the road traffic office's fees. After that the annual car tax of your canton applies.

Question 3

Should I buy a used car in Switzerland from a dealer or privately?

Accepted Answer

A dealer charges 8.1% VAT on the whole price but often adds a warranty and preparation. A private seller charges no VAT and usually gives no warranty.

Question 4

Does a used car need a new MFK when it changes hands in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Each canton decides whether a car must be re-tested when its holder changes. Either way, check the date of the last MFK on the documents.

Question 5

Does Mycarro show new cars in Switzerland too?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the manufacturers' new cars appear beside used ones, every version at its official list price. To buy, you contact the seller through the advert or the manufacturer's dealer.
