Question 1

Which petrol engine is best in a used VW Polo?

Accepted Answer

The 1.0 TSI three-cylinder in the Polo 6 balances power and economy well. The 1.0 MPI is cheap to run in town but slow outside it, and on a Polo 5 the 1.2 TSI from after the 2014 update is the safer choice.

Question 2

Is a petrol VW Polo better than a diesel one?

Accepted Answer

For short and town trips, yes: a TSI warms up quickly and has no diesel particulate filter to clog. The TDI only pays off at high mileage, and the Polo has had no diesel since its 2021 update.

Question 3

What should I check on a used VW Polo GTI?

Accepted Answer

How hard it was driven, and whether it was modified. In Switzerland a modified car needs an extraordinary test, so ask for the paperwork for any tuning, exhaust or larger wheels.

Question 4

Which petrol engines does the new VW Polo have?

Accepted Answer

The new Polo has the 1.0 TSI three-cylinder with a particulate filter, at 95 hp with a manual gearbox or DSG and at 116 hp with DSG, in trims from Trend to R-Line and Edition 50, at list price.
