Question 1

What are the known problems of the VW Golf 1.4 TSI?

Accepted Answer

Early chain-driven 1.2 and 1.4 TSI engines, in Golfs built up to about 2012, can suffer timing-chain stretch: listen for a rattle on a cold start. The belt-driven engines of the seventh generation do not share the problem.

Question 2

Which petrol VW Golf is the best buy?

Accepted Answer

A seventh-generation Golf after its 2017 update, with the 1.5 TSI, is efficient and mature, and the 150 PS version shuts down two cylinders at a steady cruise. An eighth-generation eTSI adds mild-hybrid help but always comes with DSG.

Question 3

Is a used Golf GTI or Golf R worth it in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The R's 4Motion all-wheel drive makes it usable all winter on alpine roads, while the GTI drives its front wheels only. On both, check for track use, modifications and the DSG's service history.

Question 4

Which petrol versions does the new VW Golf come in?

Accepted Answer

The new Golf has the 1.5 eTSI mild hybrid with 116 or 150 PS, or a 2.0 TSI with 204 PS and 4Motion in R-Line trim, all with DSG. Each comes as a hatchback or Variant estate, in Trend, Life, Style or R-Line.
