Question 1

Can you drive a van with a car licence in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Yes, category B covers a vehicle up to 3,500 kg total weight with no more than eight passenger seats. The total weight is in field 33 of the Fahrzeugausweis.

Question 2

Does a heavy van pay more car tax in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

In cantons that tax total weight, such as Bern, Uri or Appenzell Ausserrhoden, it does, and a long-wheelbase van weighs far more than a car. In cantons taxing displacement, such as Valais or Thurgau, the engine size counts instead.

Question 3

What should I check on a used camper van?

Accepted Answer

That the pop-up roof, its seals and fabric are intact, and that the auxiliary heater, fridge and leisure battery work. Damp inside the cupboards or under the roof points to leaks.

Question 4

Which new vans are sold in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Among them the VW Caddy, Caravelle, Multivan, California and the electric ID. Buzz, the Mercedes V-Class, Vito and Marco Polo, the Kia PV5, Ford Tourneo Connect, Citroën Berlingo, Toyota Proace and Hyundai Staria, as diesel, petrol, hybrid or electric versions.
