Question 1

What kind of automatic gearbox does a Toyota hybrid have?

Accepted Answer

An e-CVT, a planetary gearset between the engine and two electric motors, with no clutch, torque converter or gear steps. The engine revs rise and fall smoothly, which some drivers notice under hard acceleration.

Question 2

What is Toyota MultiMode, and should I avoid it?

Accepted Answer

MultiMode is an automated manual gearbox fitted to some older Aygo, Yaris and Auris models. It shifts slowly and pauses between gears; try one before buying if you expect a smooth automatic.

Question 3

Does a Toyota e-CVT need much maintenance?

Accepted Answer

Very little: it has no clutch to wear. Gearbox fluid and the hybrid system are checked at Toyota's scheduled services, so ask for the service history.

Question 4

Is the Toyota Land Cruiser available with an automatic gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Yes, many used Land Cruisers have a torque-converter automatic, with permanent four-wheel drive. The new 2.8-litre diesel comes only as an automatic.

Question 5

Accepted Answer

Every hybrid and plug-in hybrid from the Aygo X to the RAV4, the electric bZ4X, C-HR+ and Urban Cruiser, the Land Cruiser 2.8 diesel, and the Proace City Verso and Proace Verso with an eight-speed automatic.
