How is car tax calculated in the canton of Ticino?

Empty weight times 0.1, plus kW times a fuel factor: 2.4 for petrol, 2.5 for diesel, 1.4 for a petrol hybrid, 1.9 for a diesel hybrid and 0.2 for electric. Power therefore weighs more than weight for a combustion car.

Do electric cars pay car tax in Ticino?

Yes, but little: an electric car pays the weight part and only 0.2 per kW, against 2.4 for a petrol car. Its tax is mostly set by its weight.

Can I buy a used car in Italy and register it in Ticino?

Yes. At the border it pays the 4% automobile tax and 8.1% import VAT, with no customs duty, and customs stamps form 13.20 A before the Sezione della circolazione registers it.

From CHF 1,200 to CHF 1,590,000, half under CHF 34,900 · Typically 2023 with 23,792 km · Most listed: Mercedes-Benz GLC, Audi Q3, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Ticino taxes a car on its empty weight plus its power, weighted by fuel: diesel counts most per kW, a petrol hybrid far less and an electric car least of all. A powerful diesel therefore costs clearly more each year than a hybrid.
