Question 1

Which used Skoda Octavia generation should I buy?

Accepted Answer

The third generation, from 2013 to 2020, is mature, with TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines and often as a Combi 4x4. The fourth, from 2020, adds mild-hybrid and plug-in iV versions and more digital controls.

Question 2

How does Skoda's 4x4 work?

Accepted Answer

On the combustion models a multi-plate clutch, of the Haldex type, sends power to the rear axle as soon as the front wheels slip. It is especially sought after in Switzerland for snow and mountain passes.

Question 3

What should I check on a used Skoda with a DSG?

Accepted Answer

On the wet-clutch DSG of the 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TSI versions, whether the gearbox oil was changed on schedule, and on every version how it shifts when cold. Judder pulling away on the dry seven-speed DSG can point to the clutch or the mechatronic unit.
