Question 1

Does a new SUV pay more car tax in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

It does in cantons that tax total weight or power, such as Bern, Aargau, St. Gallen and Lucerne, where a heavy SUV pays more than a lighter car. Cantons that tax engine size, such as Valais or Schaffhausen, look only at displacement.

Question 2

Do I need an all-wheel-drive SUV in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Not everywhere: on the Plateau, good winter tyres on a front-wheel-drive car usually suffice. In the mountains or on a steep driveway, all-wheel drive makes winter starts much easier, so check each version's drivetrain, as many compact SUVs drive only the front wheels.

Question 3

Which new SUVs come as electric cars in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Electric versions exist of the Peugeot 3008 and 5008, the Hyundai Kona and the Alfa Romeo Junior, among many others. Depending on the canton, an electric SUV pays no annual tax, a reduced one or the full amount.
