Question 1

Can you drive a Mercedes V-Class on a car licence in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with up to eight seats besides the driver and at most 3,500 kg of total weight, the V-Class and Vito Tourer fall within category B. The total weight is in field 33 of the Fahrzeugausweis.

Question 2

What should I check on a used Mercedes Marco Polo?

Accepted Answer

Work the pop-up roof, the kitchen and the auxiliary heater if fitted, and look for damp in the roof bellows. These parts wear with use as much as the engine does, so ask for their service record too.

Question 3

How much car tax does a Mercedes van pay in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the holder's canton. Where tax follows total weight, as in Bern, Uri or Appenzell, a V-Class of over three tonnes costs clearly more than a car, while displacement cantons such as Valais tax its 2.0 or 2.1-litre diesel like any other.

Question 4

Which new Mercedes V-Class and Vito versions are on sale in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The V-Class and Vito Tourer come with 2.0-litre diesels of 136 to 237 PS or a 231 PS petrol, in three lengths, and the Vito also as the electric eVito with a 62 or 93 kWh battery. The Marco Polo campers run on diesel, the new electric VLE has 276 or 422 PS, and all are automatic.
