Question 1

How is car tax calculated for a Mercedes in St. Gallen?

Accepted Answer

From 2026 it is CHF 182 per 1,000 kg of total weight plus CHF 1.27 per kW. Energy label A gets 50% off and B 25%, in the first year and the three after.

Question 2

Does an electric Mercedes pay less tax in St. Gallen?

Accepted Answer

Not as such: electric cars pay the same weight and power formula. A young EQ model in label A still gets the 50% rebate in its first year and the three after, but a heavy EQE SUV or EQS pays on its full weight.

Question 3

Does an old Mercedes pay more tax in St. Gallen?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a car first registered before October 2002 pays 25% more for good, as does one in label G or with no label; label F pays 12.5% more. That catches a W124 E-Class or an R129 SL kept as a classic.

Question 4

Is it worth importing a Mercedes from Germany or Austria to St. Gallen?

Accepted Answer

An import pays 4% automobile tax and 8.1% import VAT on the price and transport, though no customs duty, and needs form 13.20 A before registration. A nearly new car may also owe a CO₂ sanction, so one already on Swiss plates is often simpler.
