Question 1

What does the number on a petrol Mercedes badge mean?

Accepted Answer

Since about 2015 it shows a power class, not the engine size: a C 200 and a C 300 of the same generation can share a 2.0-litre engine in different tunes. The displacement is in field 37 of the Fahrzeugausweis.

Question 2

What should I check on a used petrol Mercedes engine?

Accepted Answer

Listen at a cold start for a rattle from the timing chain or camshaft adjusters, which some Mercedes four-cylinders are known for. A record of oil changes on schedule matters on these turbocharged engines.

Question 3

How much car tax does a petrol Mercedes pay in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the holder's canton. Cantons that tax displacement, such as Graubünden, Valais and Solothurn, charge a 4.0-litre AMG V8 far more than a 1.3-litre A-Class, while others tax weight, power or CO₂.

Question 4

Which new Mercedes are sold with a petrol engine in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Petrol versions run from the A-Class and C-Class through the E-Class, CLE and S-Class to the GLC, GLE and GLS, the SL, AMG GT and G-Class, plus the V-Class and Vito. All are automatic, at list price beside the used cars.
