Question 1

What should I check on the roof of a used Mercedes SLK or SL?

Accepted Answer

Open and close the folding hard top several times: it should move smoothly without stopping halfway or showing a warning, and the seals should be supple. A slow or stuck roof can mean a hydraulic leak or a faulty sensor.

Question 2

Is a Mercedes convertible usable in a Swiss winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on winter tyres: the C-Class, E-Class and CLE Cabriolets have a lined fabric roof, and many have Airscarf, the neck-level heating in the seats. The folding hard top of an SLK or older SL closes like a coupé.

Question 3

Does a Mercedes SL with Active Body Control need special checks?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on SL models fitted with Active Body Control the hydraulic suspension is costly to repair if it leaks. The car should sit level after standing overnight, with no warning on the dashboard.

Question 4

Which new Mercedes convertibles are on sale in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The CLE Cabriolet, with 204 to 381 PS and 4MATIC on every Swiss version, plus the AMG CLE 53, and the Mercedes-AMG SL from the four-cylinder SL 43 to the V8 SL 63 and the SL 63 S E Performance plug-in hybrid. The Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 sits at the top, and all are automatic.
