Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does my Mercedes A-Class have?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the generation: the W169 of 2004 to 2012 uses the Autotronic CVT, while the W176 and W177 use a 7G-DCT or 8G-DCT dual-clutch. The service records or the car's specification name the gearbox.

Question 2

What should I check on an A-Class with the 7G-DCT?

Accepted Answer

How it pulls away and creeps when manoeuvring, especially from cold: judder or hesitation can point to the clutches or the control unit. Ask whether the gearbox oil has been changed, as a dual-clutch depends on it.

Question 3

Is the Autotronic CVT in an older A-Class reliable?

Accepted Answer

It is the weak point of the W169: a slipping, whining or jerky take-off points to a worn gearbox, and the repair is expensive on a car of that age. Test it both cold and warm before you buy.

Question 4

Is the new Mercedes A-Class automatic only?

Accepted Answer

Yes, every new A-Class sold in Switzerland is automatic, from the A 180 d diesel and the A 200 petrol to the A 250 e plug-in hybrid, the 4MATIC versions and the AMG A 35 and A 45 S.
