Is the Ford Focus PowerShift gearbox reliable?

The dry-clutch PowerShift fitted to some third-generation petrol Focus cars is known for juddering when pulling away. On a test drive, check for smooth starts in slow traffic and ask whether software updates or clutch work were done.

Which automatic does the fourth-generation Ford Focus have?

An eight-speed torque-converter automatic, chosen with a rotary dial on the centre console. With the EcoBoost mild hybrid, a seven-speed dual-clutch was added later.

Was the Ford Focus diesel available as an automatic?

Yes, both generations paired diesels with an automatic: the PowerShift on the third, the eight-speed on the fourth. A diesel automatic estate makes a relaxed long-distance car.
