Question 1

Is an estate or an SUV better for a family in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

An estate usually offers similar load space with less weight, so it uses less fuel and, in cantons that tax weight such as Bern or St. Gallen, pays less tax. An SUV gives a higher seat and more ground clearance.

Question 2

Which used estates come with all-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

Many: the Skoda Octavia and Superb 4x4, VW Passat 4Motion, Audi A4 and A6 Avant quattro, BMW 3 and 5 Series Touring xDrive, Mercedes 4MATIC estates and Volvo V60 and V90 AWD. Audi's allroad and Volvo's Cross Country add ground clearance.

Question 3

What should I check on a used estate that has carried heavy loads?

Accepted Answer

A sagging rear, worn rear dampers and the condition of the tow bar if one is fitted. On a car that has towed, check how the clutch or automatic gearbox behaves pulling away on a slope.

Question 4

Which new estate cars are sold in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

Among them the Skoda Octavia and Superb, VW Golf and Passat, Peugeot 308, Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla, Volvo V60, BMW 3 and 5 Series Touring, Audi A5 and A6 Avant and Mercedes C- and E-Class. Every new version on sale is automatic.
