Which BMW models were sold with a manual gearbox?

Older generations of the 1, 2 and 3 Series, the X1 and the Z4 E89 were offered with a six-speed manual, as were several M2, M3 and M4 versions. Newer BMWs come almost only as automatics.

What wears on a manual BMW diesel?

The clutch and the dual-mass flywheel, especially on high-torque diesels such as the 320d or 520d. Listen for rattling at idle and judder when pulling away.

Why buy a BMW with a manual gearbox?

For control and a direct feel: a manual 3 Series or M car with rear-wheel drive is what many enthusiasts want. In recent generations the automatic is quicker and often more economical, though.
