Question 1

How is the car tax calculated in Geneva?

Accepted Answer

CHF 120, plus for a petrol, diesel or hybrid car a charge per g/km of CO₂ that rises by band, from CHF 0.25 up to 120 g to CHF 12 above 300 g. A car with no CO₂ figure pays a CHF 500 surcharge.

Question 2

Do electric BMWs pay car tax in Geneva?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the base plus a surcharge by empty weight, from CHF 50 above 1,400 kg to CHF 1,400 above 2,600 kg. A heavy iX therefore pays far more than a light electric car.

Question 3

Is Geneva's CO₂ car tax being challenged?

Accepted Answer

Yes: in June 2026 a first-instance administrative court ruled that each CO₂ band should tax only the grams inside it. The ruling is under appeal, so the vehicle office still bills on the whole figure.

Question 4

Can I register a BMW bought in France in Geneva?

Accepted Answer

Yes, once it clears customs: you pay 4% automobile tax and 8.1% import VAT but no duty, and customs stamps form 13.20 A, which registration requires. A car already on Swiss plates skips all of this.
