Question 1

Does a BMW convertible have a hardtop or a soft top?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the model. The 3 Series E93 (2007–2013), the 4 Series F33 (2014–2020) and the Z4 E89 have a folding metal hardtop; the 1 and 2 Series Cabrio, the current 4 Series G23 and the Z4 G29 have a fabric roof.

Question 2

What should I check on a used BMW convertible?

Accepted Answer

Open and close the roof fully several times and look for leaks, damp carpets and worn seals. On a folding hardtop the panels must line up cleanly, since repairs to the mechanism are costly.

Question 3

Can you drive a BMW convertible in a Swiss winter?

Accepted Answer

Yes, on winter tyres. Closed, the hardtop models are as quiet as a coupé, and the 4 Series Convertible also comes with xDrive all-wheel drive for snowy roads.

Question 4

What versions does the new BMW 4 Series Convertible come in?

Accepted Answer

The 420i and 430i xDrive petrols, the 420d and 430d diesels, the M440i and M440d xDrive, and the M4 Competition M xDrive with 530 hp, all with an automatic gearbox.
