Question 1

BMW X3 30i or M40i: which petrol should I buy?

Accepted Answer

The 30i's 2.0 four-cylinder is quick enough for most and cheaper to run. The M40i's 3.0 straight-six is far faster and sounds better, but uses noticeably more fuel and costs more in tyres and brakes.

Question 2

What should I check on a used petrol BMW X3?

Accepted Answer

On an F25 20i with the N20 2.0 turbo, listen for a whine or rattle from the timing chain, whose guides are a known weak point; ask whether they were replaced. On every turbo petrol, look for oil leaks and a full service history.

Question 3

Is a petrol or a diesel BMW X3 better in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

A petrol X3 suits short trips and town use, with no particulate filter to clog. A diesel pays off on long distances, with a heavy trailer or on frequent mountain passes.

Question 4

How is a petrol BMW X3 taxed in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

By the holder's canton. Displacement-based cantons such as Glarus, Valais or Solothurn charge a 3.0 six-cylinder more than a 2.0, and Fribourg taxes power in bands, so an M40i pays there more than a 20i.
