Question 1

Is the dual-clutch gearbox in the BMW X1 reliable?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed dual-clutch shifts quickly and is generally sound. On a test drive, check that it pulls away smoothly, uphill too, and does not judder while manoeuvring.

Question 2

Which used BMW X1 has a torque-converter automatic?

Accepted Answer

Every automatic E84 and most F48s, notably those with xDrive. These Steptronic gearboxes are smooth and tough; on a high-mileage car, ask whether the oil was ever changed.

Question 3

Is the BMW X1 xDrive25e an automatic?

Accepted Answer

Yes, every plug-in hybrid X1 is automatic, from the F48 xDrive25e to the U11 xDrive25e and xDrive30e, which use the seven-speed dual-clutch.

Question 4

Is the new BMW X1 only sold as an automatic?

Accepted Answer
