Question 1

Which is the better used buy, the BMW 520d or the 530d?

Accepted Answer

The 520d uses less fuel, costs less to buy and suits most drivers. The straight-six 530d is smoother and stronger, which helps when towing or on alpine passes, and is considered very durable.

Question 2

Does the BMW 520d have timing chain problems?

Accepted Answer

The N47 four-cylinder, used until about 2014, is known for timing chain wear, which shows as a rattle at idle. The B47 that replaced it has a much better record.

Question 3

What should I check on a used diesel BMW 5 Series driven mostly in town?

Accepted Answer

Short trips can clog the particulate filter and the EGR valve. Ask how the car was used and look for regeneration warnings; regular motorway runs keep the filter clean.

Question 4

Which diesel versions does the new BMW 5 Series have?

Accepted Answer

The new 5 Series diesel comes as the 520d with 197 hp, with or without xDrive, and as the straight-six 540d xDrive with 303 hp, both as saloon and Touring, automatic, at list price beside the used cars.
