Question 1

Which petrol engine is best in a used BMW 4 Series?

Accepted Answer

The straight-six 3.0 of the 440i and M440i is the smoothest and the most sought after. The four-cylinder 2.0 of the 420i and 430i uses less fuel and, in its later B48 form, is considered robust.

Question 2

What goes wrong on a petrol BMW 420i or 428i?

Accepted Answer

Early cars use the N20 four-cylinder, whose timing chain guides can wear; a rattle on a cold start is the warning sign. From around 2016 the B48 replaced it and has a better record.

Question 3

Is a used BMW 4 Series Cabrio a good buy in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The F33's folding metal roof makes it a snug coupé in winter but takes boot space when stowed. The G23 from 2021 uses a lighter fabric roof; on either, check that the roof runs smoothly and the seals keep water out.

Question 4

Which versions does the new BMW 4 Series come in, in Switzerland?

Accepted Answer

The new petrol 4 Series comes as Coupé, Cabrio and Gran Coupé, each as the 420i with 184 hp, the 430i xDrive with 245 hp and the M440i xDrive with 392 hp, all automatic, at list price beside the used cars.
