Question 1

Is the three-cylinder engine in the BMW 118i reliable?

Accepted Answer

The 1.5 three-cylinder used since 2015 is generally considered robust and economical. It runs a little less smoothly at idle than a four-cylinder, which is normal for the design.

Question 2

What is the difference between the BMW M135i and M140i?

Accepted Answer

Both are F20 versions with a 3.0 turbo straight-six and rear-wheel drive; the M140i of 2016 has more power. Some came with xDrive all-wheel drive, which helps on Swiss winter roads.

Question 3

What should I check on an older petrol BMW 1 Series?

Accepted Answer

On the 1.6 four-cylinder fitted to the F20 until 2015, listen for a timing-chain rattle on a cold start. On every turbo petrol, a record of regular oil changes matters most.

Question 4

Which petrol versions does the new BMW 1 Series come in?

Accepted Answer

The new petrol 1 Series runs from the 116 with 122 hp and the 120 with 170 hp to the 123 xDrive with 218 hp and the M135 xDrive with 300 hp, all automatic, at list price beside the used cars.
