Question 1

How is car tax calculated in the canton of Ticino?

Accepted Answer

On empty weight and power: 0.1 per kg of empty weight, plus the kW multiplied by 2.4 for petrol, 2.5 for diesel, 1.4 for a petrol hybrid, 1.9 for a diesel hybrid and 0.2 for electric. A petrol car of 1,450 kg and 110 kW pays CHF 409.

Question 2

Is a hybrid Audi cheaper to tax in Ticino?

Accepted Answer

Yes: a petrol hybrid's power is taxed at 1.4 per kW instead of 2.4, so a Q5 TFSI e pays much less on its power than a Q5 with a petrol engine alone. Its extra weight costs only 0.1 per kg.

Question 3

Is quattro worth it in Ticino?

Accepted Answer

Around Lugano, Locarno and the Mendrisiotto snow is rare and front-wheel drive is enough. In the upper Leventina, the Valle di Blenio or the Valle Maggia, quattro and winter tyres make a real difference.

Question 4

Can I buy a used Audi in Italy and register it in Ticino?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but at the border it pays the 4% automobile tax and 8.1% import VAT, with no customs duty. You register it with the stamped form 13.20 A, and a nearly new car may owe a CO₂ sanction first.
