Question 1

What is quattro on an Audi?

Accepted Answer

quattro is Audi's all-wheel drive, much sought after in Switzerland for snow and mountain roads. On the A3 and Q3 it works through an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch, whose oil should be changed on schedule.

Question 2

What is the difference between S tronic and tiptronic on an Audi?

Accepted Answer

S tronic is Audi's dual-clutch gearbox, tiptronic a conventional torque-converter automatic used on larger models such as the Q7 and Q8. Older front-wheel-drive A4s and A6s also came with the multitronic CVT, which has a weaker reputation.

Question 3

Which used Audi engines need a careful check?

Accepted Answer

The 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines built from about 2008 to 2012 were known for burning oil. On a 1.6 or 2.0 TDI built before about 2015, check that the emissions software recall was carried out.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

New Audis come with TFSI petrol, TDI diesel, e-hybrid plug-in and fully electric e-tron drives, from the A2 e-tron and A3 to the Q8 and e-tron GT, plus the sporty S and RS models. Every version is an automatic, and most larger ones have quattro.
