Question 1

V8 or V12 in a used Aston Martin?

Accepted Answer

The V8 is lighter and cheaper to run and suits the Vantage and DBX; the V12 gives the smoother, more effortless pull of a grand tourer. In cantons that tax displacement, the V12 also costs more each year.

Question 2

Which Aston Martins have the Mercedes-AMG V8?

Accepted Answer

The DB11 V8, the Vantage from 2018, the DBX and the DB12 use a 4.0 twin-turbo V8 supplied by Mercedes-AMG and tuned by Aston Martin. Earlier V8 Vantages have Aston's own naturally aspirated V8.

Question 3

Which gearbox does a used Aston Martin have?

Accepted Answer

Older V8 Vantages have a manual or the Sportshift automated manual, the DB9 a Touchtronic automatic. The DB11, DBS Superleggera, DB12 and the 2018 Vantage use an eight-speed ZF automatic, and the Vantage was also offered with a manual.

Question 4

What should I check on an older naturally aspirated Aston Martin?

Accepted Answer

A complete service history, signs of oil leaks, and the clutch on Sportshift cars, which wears faster in town. A pre-purchase inspection by a marque specialist is money well spent.
